Final Project: Reading Between the Lines

By Niko McGlashan

My partner and I decided to raise awareness on the importance of reading terms and conditions. The topic was closely related to on-line user security, which applies intensively to a high school audience. The video exclaims the importance of understanding contracts that pertain to the individuals’ concerns. The issue reflects how one can present themselves on-line and the necessary precautions needed to accurately present one’s self image on the web.

In collaboration with the class material, we used the film “Terms and Conditions May Apply,” and “Irrationally Bound: Terms of Use Licenses and the Breakdown of Consumer Rationality in the Market for Social Network Sites,” to succinctly express the importance of the matter. We also use a previous skit we created to depict the consequences of ignoring the terms and conditions.

We hope to deliver a professional and effective method of interpretation for a high-school audience by presenting the content in an immersive video. We hope that the viewers feel more pressured to inform themselves on the contract they are agreeing to, whether it is in the physical or digital world. Enjoy!

Module 9 – Coding

by Niko McGlashan

Coding has become a fundamental to the cycle of the developed world. Although coding appears to be intimidating, the approach should be considered like learning a new language; difficult to start off, but as patterns are uncovered, becomes easier to understand. The depiction of coding is in the process of being revamped, as figures such as Chris Bosh vouch for its significance and entrenched value within society.

Module 8- If a Picture Tells a Thousand Words…

by Niko McGlashan

ImageMy partner and I have created a video regarding the severity of terms of use

which contain pivotal factors that, when read, may alter one’s choice of agreeing to a license.

In this particular case, I was swindled into giving up my privacy, food, and xbox by ignoring the specifications of a contract.

Although this appears to be an exaggeration, some of the information that companies extract from contracts

can be of extreme importance for the organization further their profits. In the editing process, we made around ~12 video cuts,

3 audio edits, and used creative commons license material, which was then merged to create the final picture at the end of the video. We hope to convey an important

message regarding the importance of conditions, in a form that intrigues viewers to entrench the content.
